Nyx
Nyx, Goddess of procession,
Source of replaced beings.
The origin of both Gods and mortals.
Hear, divine Aphrodite, adorned with lucid stars.
In mesmerising hypnosis resides tenebrous Nyx,
Oneiric relief attends your wolf-light procession,
Taking pleasure in the stretched-out obscurity.
Pulling apart with fearful caution,
The companion of Spirits,
With obscure, rapid horses, journeying around the Earth.
Goddess of illusion and conducting forms,
Whose somnolent power forces apart nature's day.
Through Moirai's decree,
Self continuously proceeds illumination into the cavernous, obscure to mortals.
The cause, fearful Ananke, which no being can resist,
Encloses the World with adamantine bands/bonds.
Be present, Goddess, to your suppliant's act towards you.
Desired by all beings, and revered by all beings.
Divine, benevolent companion dispel the phobia of wolf-light grasp.
Orpheus, Initiation Through Nyx, (Torch Offering),
New English Interpretation after Thomas Taylor, by The Editor of ClassicalPhilosophy.org, Chichester, England, 2025.
For this initiation, I have turned to paraphrase, seeking once more to recapture the spiritual path; yet in doing so, the original hexameter and later rhyme have fallen away. The dramatic intensity of a Homeric narrative style has also been softened, as I believe these changes better capture the essence of the original Orphic initiations.
